Upperclassmen Shine as Men's Tennis Advances at Atlantic 10 Tournament

Niners Take on Xavier in Semifinals Saturday Afternoon

April 4, 2008

Monroeville, Pa. - The third-seeded Charlotte 49ers eliminated the six-seed Richmond 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship Friday evening at the Club 4 Life. Charlotte is now 9-13 this season.

Despite being led all season by the freshmen, experience paved the way as the upperclassmen paced the team and led the way to the victory.

"Once we lost the doubles point, with as close and tough as it was, I was worried that we might get discouraged," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "Our guys came through big time, particularly Felix Bernhoerster, who defeated a fine player in Doug Banker. Brad Clinard also had a great match to defeat one of Richmond's best players in Chris Louis, who was also a tough out. Our leaders stepped it up and lifted us. Nothing has been easy for our team, but I am proud these guys today."

Charlotte advances to take on second-seeded Xavier on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Top-seeded George Washington takes on fifth-seeded St. Bonaventure, the lone team to win twice on Friday and advance to the semifinals. That match will precede the Charlotte match at 11 a.m. Winners advance to the Sunday championship match at 11 a.m.

Charlotte is attempting to defend its 2007 title, the first conference championship for Niners men's tennis and first NCAA Tournament berth.
