Charlotte-Davidson Game Back On

49ers to Play at Davidson, Dec. 13

Aug. 15, 2008

Halton Arena - The Charlotte 49ers - Davidson Wildcats long-standing basketball series is back on. With the two programs seemingly at an impasse due to scheduling conflicts, Charlotte 49ers athletic director Judy Rose and Davidson athletic director Jim Murphy found a way to get The "Hornet's Nest" game back on the schedule for the 2008-09 season, Friday.

The two teams will play at Davidson, Dec. 13.

In addition, the athletic directors agreed in principle to play on the same Saturday for each of the following four years at alternating sites.

The deal required some rescheduling, including rescheduling the 49ers game with Winthrop, previously scheduled for Dec. 13. The 49ers game with Winthrop will now be played on Jan. 31.

"I am extremely pleased that Charlotte and Davidson were able to work this out so that we can continue the 29-year tradition," said Rose. "I want to thank Randy Peele and Tom Hickman from Winthrop in helping us make this happen. I'd also like to thank the Atlantic 10 conference, in particular Ray Cella, for adjusting the conference schedule and allowing us the opportunity to change the Winthrop game date. Our fans deserve to see this rivalry continue and I'm excited we were able to make it happen!"

Charlotte and Davidson annually play the "Hornet's Nest" game in which the two Division I programs from Mecklenburg County have battled for the Hornet's Nest Trophy. Charlotte is in possession of the Hornet's Nest Trophy after winning last year's meeting.
