Associate Head Coach:
2nd year (9th year with 49ers)

Rob Moxley returned to the Charlotte 49ers program as Associate Head Coach, May 1, 2006. A former assistant to Lutz with the 49ers and at Pfeiffer University, Moxley resigned his post as an assistant at Maryland to accept the position. He served as an assistant with the 49ers for seven years and begins his ninth year with the program; his second as Associate Head Coach. "We are fortunate to add Rob Moxley to our staff as Associate Head Coach," said Lutz. "Rob is one of the elite assistant coaches in the country as evidenced by his success in recruiting here and at Maryland. He obviously understands our system and will be able to contribute immediately in all phases of our program. In practice, Rob will work primarily with development of our perimeter players, practice management and game planning for opponents." This summer, Basketball Times ranked Moxley 10th in its top 16 "Friends of Junior Colleges" which identified those coaches best able to successfully recruit junior college stars. He landed junior college stars Charlie Coley and Lamont Mack -- two keys to the 49ers 2007-08 recruiting class being ranked as high as 13th by HoopScoop -- the highest ranking ever for a 49ers' recruiting class. Moxley spent seven years as an assistant to Lutz with the 49ers (1998-2005). He was also an assistant to Lutz at Pfeiffer University for two years (1993-95). He was an assistant at Maryland in 2005-06. "My family and I are thrilled to be returning to the Charlotte 49ers family," said Moxley. "The opportunity to be associate head coach and work for my best friend in the coaching business is a perfect situation. (Chancellor) Dr. (Phil) Dubois and (director of athletics) Judy Rose envision the 49ers as a nationally-ranked program and are taking the steps necessary to ensure success. I know the program and the people well. Their success is something that I and my family want to be a part of." A member of Lutz' first staff with the 49ers in 1998-99, Moxley helped the 49ers to five NCAA Tournament bids and one NIT appearance. This past year, Maryland went 19-13 and advanced to the NIT, giving Moxley his seventh post-season trip in eight years. Moxley, 39, served as recruiting coordinator for the Terrapins. Their 2006 recruiting class was ranked 18th-best in the nation by Rivals.com. Maryland's 2007 class was already being rated third in the nation by Hoopscoop (Clark Francis). At Charlotte, Moxley has helped land four Top 20 recruiting classes. He played an important role in signing 2001 ESPN.com National Freshman of the Year Rodney White and 2003 all-Conference USA choice Demon Brown. In addition, during his stint with the 49ers, Moxley worked closely with the 49ers perimeter players and the 49ers had the league leader in three-pointers made in each of his seven years (Diego Guevara, 1999; Jobey Thomas, 2000, 2001, 2002; Demon Brown, 2003; Brendan Plavich, 2004, 2005). Moxley began his career as an assistant under Lutz at Pfeiffer University. They worked together for two years (1993-94; 1994-95) before moving together to Gardner-Webb in 1995. When Lutz was offered an assistant position with the 49ers for the 1995-96 season, Moxley remained at Gardner-Webb. He returned to Pfeiffer for two years, 1996-98, as an assistant to head coach Dave Davis. A 1994 graduate of Pfeiffer University, Moxley and his wife, Jennifer have three children: Joey, Emily and Allison. He was a Junior College Division III all-America guard in 1991 at Montgomery (Md.) C.C. He played two seasons at Newberry (S.C.) College under coach Tom Quinn.
