Smith Second Niner To Earn All-Star Nod in Summer League

Charlotte Freshman Undefeated for Bethesda Club in Ripken Summer League

July 22, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte right-handed pitcher Andrew Smith has become the second current 49er this summer to make his summer league's all-star game, earning the nod in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.

Smith, who is 5-0, with a 3.00 ERA in seven appearances and five starts, plays for the Bethesda Big Train in the CRSCBL. He was a selection on the West All-Stars after 30 innings of work for Bethesda, fifth-most on the squad so far this summer.

Smith joins Rob Lyerly as the other current Niner to make an all-star game, earning the nod in the Northwoods League. Lyerly was 2-for-2 in the game for the South Division, which won the game 8-4 on July 14.

In his 2008 freshman campaign, Smith was 4-2 with a 5.91 ERA in 18 appearances and seven starts. He hurled 53.1 innings, fifth-most on the squad for Charlotte.

The 49ers finished 43-16 in 2008, winning 40-plus games in back-to-back seasons, a first for the program. Charlotte set the school record with a .333 batting average en route to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Regular Season and Tournament titles, and consecutive appearances in the NCAA Postseason.
