Philadelphia - Seniors Cassie Ficken and Russell Slade were joined by sophomore Ryan Jank to put three Charlotte 49ers on the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Academic All-Conference teams.
The league announced the awards on Tuesday afternoon. Voting was conducted among the Atlantic 10's sports information offices to choose the Academic team. All three of Charlotte's nominees were selected to their respective teams.
Slade and Jank gave the 49ers the most men's Academic All-Conference winners. Five other schools each placed one runner on the seven-man team.
Charlotte tied with Rhode Island, which had three women's selections, for the most academic all-conference winners combined.
Slade finished 17th overall at the A-10 Championships and posts a GPA of 3.438 while pursuing a master's degree in geography. He narrowly missed out on an all-conference award (top 15 places) at the championships but helped the Niners' men's team to a third-place finish overall.
Jank, a sophomore, led the team in three meets early this season, including a fourth-place finish at the Clemson Invitational. He made the academic team with a 4.00 GPA in pre-business.
Ficken, a redshirt senior, finished third at the league's championship and posts a cumulative GPA of 3.631 while pursuing a dual bachelor's/master's degree in civil engineering. She was a three-time Performer of the Week this season.
Emily Anderson of Rhode Island was chosen as the A-10's cross country Student-Athlete of the year with a 3.96 GPA and a 22nd place finish at the league championship.
They were joined on the six-woman team by league champion Rachel Papin (La Salle) and runner-up Amanda Brown (Xavier), as well as Rhode Island's Katherine Guilfoyle and Cindy Smith.
The men's Student-Athlete of the year was Eric Contreras of Dayton, who has a 3.98 GPA and finished 52nd at the A-10 Championships this year. Also on the team were Kevin Borrelli (Duquesne), John Ciccarelli (Richmond), Matthew Clark (Massachusetts) and Matt Stuber (Saint Louis).
