McAlpine Park, Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's cross country team began the 2005 season in fine fashion, Saturday, capturing first-place at the 2005 Charlotte Relays in both the College and Open Divisions.

The men's team tied Club Intermont for the Open Division men's title while outdistancing Virginia Intermont for the College Division title. The women's team bested Queens and Wofford.

Freshman Aja Jackson (Charlotte, N.C./EE Waddell) led the first 3K leg of the women's race before passing off to relay teammate Cassie Ficken (Conifer, Colo./Conifer), a senior all-America, who easily opened the gap. The team of Jackson/Ficken took first-place with a time of 21:13.8, more than 30 seconds better than the runner-up team of Charlotte's Amelia Slagle (Davidson, N.C./North Mecklenburg) and Tsehaye Dagnachew (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville), who finished with a time of 21:45.6. Charlotte boasted four of the top five College Division relay teams to post a team score of 7. Queens finished second with 24 points and Wofford was third with 34 points.

On the men's side, Club Intermont's Fernando Cabada and Corey Duquette claimed first place with a time of 30:45.6 over their combined 10K course. Charlotte's Jamil Muhaimin (Raleigh, N.C./Southeast Raleigh) and Russell Slade (London, Eng./Kings) took second place overall and first in the college division with a time of 30:51.3. Charlotte's Nick Sunseri (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ryan Jank (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) placed fourth overall and second in the college division with a time of 30:57.4. Charlotte and Club Intermont tied for the overall title with 12 points. In the College Division, the 49ers men owned four of the top five times to post a team score of 7, besting Virginia Intermont (19) and Davidson (28).
