Charlotte, N.C. - On a busy kickoff weekend in college sports, the Charlotte Men's and Women's Cross Country teams were both in action at the Covered Bridge Open on the campus of Appalachian State University.
On the women's side the 49ers took home a third place finish, while on the men's side the Niners took home a sixth place finish.
With the season just getting under way, Head Coach Brad Herbster chose to hold out his top runners, but even without the likes of Aja Jackson and Amanda Goetschius on the women's side and Chase Eckard and Dakota Lowery on the men's side, the two teams were still able to finish in the top half of their respective fields.
Senior harrier Stephanie Snyder led the way in the women's race for Charlotte as she cruised across the line in ninth place with a time of 19:06 on the 5K course.
Following Snyder were Liana Blue (11th, 19:16), Janet Barry (14th, 19:36), Laura McCary (16th, 19:43) and Jackie Ross (34th, 20:13).
In the men's race it was Jordan Rickard leading the way as he finished in 12th place with a time of 26:28 on the 8K course.

"Jordan (Rickard) really stepped up for us and ran a solid race," said 49er mentor Herbster.
Florida State won the women's team race, with a score of 15 points, which is the lowest possible score in cross country as their top five went 1-5.
Rounding out the top five were Appalachian State, Charlotte, Clemson and Winthrop.
"I was exceptionally pleased with the way our women ran...without Amanda, Aja and the rest of the top four to lean on, our girls performed as we hoped they would, Stephanie (Snyder) ran a very solid race and really stepped up," said Herbster of his women's squad.
The Seminoles also won the men's race with 34 points and were followed by Queens, Appalachian State, Clemson and North Florida.
Charlotte will be back in action on September 13, 2008 when it hosts the first home meet of the season, when the Bojangle's Invitational comes to the Queen City.
