Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers track & field stars Cassie Ficken (Confier, Colo.) and Sharonda Johnson (Raleigh, N.C.) have been named 2005 National All-Academic Team selections. The teams were chosen by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), which made the announcement on Friday, August 12.
Ficken and Johnson received the awards from the USTFCCCA for achieving grade point averages above 3.25. Ficken (3.62 GPA) is entering her fifth year in Charlotte's dual bachelor's/master's program in civil engineering, while Johnson (3.786 GPA) is entering her junior year with a major in chemistry.
The awards add to already-impressive resumes for each student-athlete, both of whom were second-team Academic All-District selections last spring.
Among Ficken's accomplishments: she captured the school's first-ever indoor distance All-America award at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, was the C-USA Indoor Track Female Athlete of the Year, and is receiving a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship from the Carolina Panthers this Saturday.
Johnson, who earned All-America honors in the triple jump at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships, is a three-time C-USA triple jump champion. She holds the school records in both the indoor and outdoor triple, competed at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, and was an Academic All-America selection in 2004.
