The University of North Carolina at Charlotte was rated one of the 10 best comprehensive universities in the south in two rankings by the U.S. News and World Report. Money magazine listed UNC Charlotte as one of the 10 United States institutions offering an excellent education while holding down costs.
Most recently, UNC Charlotte was recognized as one of just two universities in North Carolina where students can get "An Ivy League Education at State University Prices". The book, of the same name, noted that UNC Charlotte is the type of university which allows its students the opportunity to become leaders at an early age.
The university offers 80 undergraduate degree options, 51 master's degree options and six doctoral programs. Academic programs are divided among the College of Arts and Sciences and six professional colleges: Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Education, Information Technology, and Health and Human Services.
In addition to offering recognized majors in professional areas and the liberal arts, UNC Charlotte seeks to produce well-rounded, well-educated students, no matter what their course of study.
The campus is located on almost 1,000 beautifully landscaped acres 10 miles from downtown Charlotte on N.C. Highway 49 near its intersection with U.S. 29. It is just eight miles from the interchange of interstates 85 and 77.
Construction on campus began in 1960 and expansion continues today, giving the university a distinctly contemporary look. These modern facilities are efficiently heated and air-conditioned and are accessible to the physically disabled. Parking rings the outer areas, making UNC Charlotte an attractive, pedestrian-oriented campus.
Construction has recently been completed on the Fretwell Arts and Sciences building, the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC) and the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center. The SAC is now the main center for campus activity. Food courts, game rooms, weight rooms and a jogging track keep the SAC buzzing with students all day. The SAC has also enabled the 49ers to bring its men's basketball games back on campus on a full-time basis.
The J. Murrey Atkins Library has undergone renovations, offering students well appointed areas for work and research.
The library offers a variety of services, with collections totalling 1.5 million items.
UNC Charlotte also offers a wide variety of living arrangements, from high-rise resident halls to on-campus apartments and suites. In addition, the campus is surrounded by numerous apartment complexes.
There are over 120 clubs and organizations that students can get involved in - from fraternities and sororities to student government and club sports. Intramural sports are one of the major attractions for students. Sports range from flag football to water polo.
UNC Charlotte's location in the Southern Piedmont of North Carolina also makes the region's many vacation spots easily accessible. It is only a two-hour drive to the North Carolina mountains and just over three hours to the nearest beaches.
